Born in the late 18th century, Chief Seattle was a famous figure in the history of the American West. He was the leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes, which had lived near the Puget Sound for thousands of years. When white settlers discovered the abundance of this land, Seattle encouraged his people to live peacefully with the newcomers.
