In the spring of 2008 Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) released Rukhsana Khans childrens book, Coming to Canada, for educators and Settlement Workers to use with their students and clients. The idea for the creation of the novel grew out of the Settlement Workers and teachers realization that immigration, settlement, arrival and adjustment are complex and challenging processes that place both visible and invisible stresses on immigrant children, adolescents, and adults. The novel written through the eyes of a newly-arrived, grade three student, takes the reader on this journey and presents the differences that personality, age, gender, and outlook can play in the adjustment process. We also see the complexities in adjusting to school in Canada and Canadian culture. This Guide is designed to provide teachers with a wealth of activities to use with their students as they study the book and explore its themes. The resource is not intended as a step-by-step guide but rather as a smorgasboard from which teachers can choose the activities which best meet the needs of their class.
