Instrumental. This Hungarian melody was, in its original form, a lament for the hero Rakoczy. It was arranged as a march early in the 19th century by a military band master. Berlióz heard it and introduced it into his Damnation Faust, with the reslut that it made a furore all over Europe. Later Liszt used it as the basis for his 16th Hungarian Rhapsody.
