Tannhauser, one of Wagner's earlier operas, was premiered in 1845. It depicts a man's struggle between two very different lifestyles and values. One of the most exciting scenes of the opera occurs in the second act where guests assemble and enter the Great Hall of Song of the castle of Wartburt in the Thuringian part of Germany. A grand song contest is held in the hall and the character Tannhauser is one of the participants. The entrance and march of the guests bring to life the tradition of the song contests of 13th century Germany.
