These Scottish dances were selected from Beethoven's Six Ecossaises, a keyboard set without opus number (Wo) 83). They reflect the interest in folk music as an expression of the nationalism so strong at the time, such as mazurkas, Hungarian and German dances, and all things Turkish. It is known that Beethoven knew and liked the novels of Walter Scott, and that my be a link with this set. The music is transcribed as written, without simplifying on "arranging".
