For earliest pioneers, each season in the first years of life in their new homeland brought with it many hardships and struggles. Most tried to arrive in their new homeland in spring or early summer in time to plant crops - food for the coming winter. If time permitted, their first log cabin was built. For many families, there was little food to get them through the first winter. A wet and cold spring could delay planting and jeopardize food supply for the coming winter. A summer drought and plagues of insects could wipe out entire crops. Autumn was usually the busiest season - gathering, drying, salting and preserving food for the pioneer family and their animals.
