Actor Gary Beadle, (formerly EastEnders' Paul Truman), takes us on a personal journey of discovery, that begins in the last years of the 18th Century and ends in the 20th Century. Gary visits archives, museums and historical sites in Jamaica, Barbados, Liverpool, London and Windsor. Drawing on a wealth of historical archive, the film uses a combination of presenter-led documentary and dramatic reconstruction to tell the story of how between 1795 and 1927, the West India Regiment shaped British attitudes to race and citizenship.
