Most minerals are pure, solid materials made up of smaller particles or elements that occur naturally as part of the Earth's crust. Found all over the world, they are usually considered to be inorganic - meaning they are not made up of plant or animal material. Minerals have different colours, shapes and hardnesses. Some minerals are attracted to magnets and others have unusual tastes, or react to certain chemicals. The make-up of minerals never changes, thus they can be identified by the elements they contain. Minerals can also be identified by their physical properties such as colour, hardness, luster, streak, crystal shape, cleavage and feel.
