Although Native arts and crafts were traditionally an expression of spirituality, for many artists today, arts and crafts have become a means of livelihood. Ancient Native art in the form of petroglyphs or rock carvings, and pictographs or rock paintings, have been found in various sites across Canada and some have been dated from 3,500 to 4,500 years old. The art of speech, or oral art, recounts in stories, myths and legends the origins of the Earth and its creatures. Today, Native craft training and marketing boards are assisting artisans and craftspeople across the country. For some it has proven to be a means of livelihood, and for others a way to connect with, appreciate and fully understand their culture and traditions.
