Save the Penguins challenges students to investigate the impacts of climate change. As the Earth warms and ice melts, penguins lose habitat. Penguins need to stay cool in a warming world. One way we can help is to use less energy at home for heating and cooling. This can lessen the impact on global climate change. Energy efficient houses that minimize unnecessary heat transfer will draw less electricity from the fossil fuel burning power plants and not contribute as much to global warming. Students test materials and them use the results to design and build and test a dwelling for a penguin shaped ice cube, who represents our need to stay cool in a warming world. Save the Penguins is a great introduction to engineering, the design process, scientific inquiry, and the science of heat transfer.
