"Wampum is a type of bead made from shells. Wampum has a special significance to many Indigenous peoples, as it was, and continues to be, used to make wampum belts. Many belts tell of ancient agreements between Indigenous people and European governments, agreements that Indigenous peoples consider to be binding today. European people did not understand wampum belts, so Indigenous peoples still struggle to have wampum belt agreements honoured. This information report comes from the Haudenosaunee community.
