Discipline comes in many forms and has many meaning for different people. In this video we look at traditional Indigenous concepts versus western concepts and learn about the roles and responsibilities within family dynamics. We will also look at the key aspects of Section 43 of the Criminal Code, which is also known as 'the spanking provision.' Historically, parents have had the duty of disciplining their children and have had the right to spank them when appropriate. Many parents do not understand what the law in Canada states regarding spanking children. This has caused some parents to 'give up' disciplining their children at all, for fear that Children and Youth Services will apprehend their children. Through this video we gain insight into parenting views learn about the Supreme Court's decision on spanking as well as alternatives to discipline within the family structure.
