L'íl'wata was born of an encounter that took place in the early 1970s between an Interior Salish community in British Columbia and Alanis Obomsawin a visionary activist at the outset of her remarkable career in cinema. Challenging official historical accounts that denied Aboriginal people their own voice, Obomsawin invited the members of the L'íl'wat First Nation to tell their own stories. The result is this fresh and multi-faceted portrait of a culture with first-person accounts of residential school life, ancestral puberty rites, and traditional economic practises. Featuring important early work from Alanis Obomsawin, L'íl'wata finds new life in this remastered DVD edition.
