Mel Prescott's ordinary day walking dogs takes a strange turn when her ex-boyfriend Todd shows up and wants to go out with her. Though she's reluctant to say yes, when he hands her a gift of Givenchy pumps, she caves. Mel receives another mysterious gift that day however-- an envelope and when she opens it, she finds a coded message that, when she decodes it, says "Play or Die". Mel is stunned and angry.
