Mbarouk Mussa Omar is from a small East African Island called Pemba. Nearly ten years ago he visited a tiny neighboring islet called Kokota and was shocked by what he saw. Kokota was teetering towards collapse, and Mbarouk knew climate change and deforestation were the culprits. He desperately wanted to help Kokota, but what could one poor man from Pemba possibly do? Kokota: The Islet of Hope tells the story of Mbarouk's quest to help Kokota. This short documentary introduces viewers to resilient people living on the front lines of climate change and tells the story of how these unlikely heroes have managed to innovatively adapt to a warming climate while reforesting their island. "From East Africa comes an inspiring story of people working together to combat the effects of climate change. The island of Pemba and the islet of Kokota lie within the Zanzibar archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. A decade ago when Mbarouk Mussa Omar visited Kokota, it was teetering toward collapse. He recognized deforestation and climate change as the culprits. Mbarouk teamed up with Jeff Schnurr, a Canadian visitor with tree planting experience. Schnurr's knowledge and Mbarouk's connections with Kokotans mobilized local residents to work with innovative solutions to adapt to climate change. Kokota: the Islet of Hope celebrates the engagement of a local community to adapt to a warming climate through reforesting their island. Jeff Schnurr is the co-founder of Community Forests International, an environmental start-up based in Sackville, New Brunswick. CFI's global success continues to grow as it fosters environmental stewardship through establishing community forests, promoting sustainable forestry techniques and initiating environmental education."--Container.
