Communities around the world have laws. Police officers have the authority to make sure that those laws are followed so that communities stay safe. They are available 24 hours a day if someone needs their help. Police officers spend a lot of time in the neighborhoods that they patrol, getting to know the people that live there and teaching them how to keep themselves from becoming victims of crime.
