Many people know Canada was a haven for Black refugees escaping slavery in the United States in the 1800s. However, few realize that for over 200 years, the early colonies of Canada permitted slavery. Black and Indigenous slaves were sold and treated like property, and not recognized as human beings. Now, Black Canadians are presenting petitions to the government, calling for a formal apology.
