Forced by fate from early childhood to cope with both the physical illness of her sister and behavioral problems of her father, as well as surviving a dangerous sea voyage in pirate-infested waters out of communist Vietnam, Kathy Luu always managed to rise above the challenges of her life situation. Luu obtained a nail technician license and learned everything she could about the industry. Finally, she decided to start her own business, Spa Logic, a luxury day spa catering to Washington D.C.'s elite local traffic as well as the steady tourist trade. She also learned how to aim high and think positively, as well as look for funding from non-bank sources. Spa Logic now has over 50 employees - many are also refugees from far-away places - and it's conservatively valued at about $2 million.
