Anna is a young Japanese-American girl whose grandparents in Japan have been sending her kokeshi, the Japanese dolls made of wood and a bit of paint, every year since she was very young. The dolls, like people, are all different from each other. Like people, the things they have in common is that they are all beautiful. As Anna grows, her collection grows with her, and we see how these dolls bring Anna and her grandparents closer and closer as time goes by.
