In ancient Athens, women played important roles in private and public life despite their limitations. Wealthy women managed their households and educated their daughters, skilled weavers manufactured high quality fabrics, and women were important as priestesses and prophets in Greek religions. However, women were not allowed to vote, own property or represent themselves in court. Poor women had to work outside of their households. Female protagonists in Greek literature show the influence women had in many aspects of Athenian society.
