Throughout the world, only 1% of waters are inside protected ocean parks, but in the Bahamas that number is closer to 10%, thanks to the Bahamas National Trust. The positive benefits of these marine protected areas, healthier plants and animals, etc., travel well beyond their man-made borders, spilling into greater Bahamian waters. For every troubling story about what is being lost in our oceans due to climate change, there is an effort being made by the Bahamas National Trust to remind us what can also be found. Stories include: the loss of native fish species, due to invasive lionfish, and how the Trust is fighting back; the theft of exotic Rock Iguanas by poachers, taken on the plane ride of their lives, and their eventual rescue; the loss of a delicate coral reef to a boating accident, and the discovery of greater purpose, as locals band together with the National Trust to rehabilitate this underwater ecosystem as best they can.
