In the Fall of 2021, young farmer Stuart Oke told us that he was off to Glasgow, UK for two weeks to attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) - the largest annual climate change conference attended by world leaders and renowned climate activists. Stuart and his partner Nikki own and operate Rooted Oak Farm (rootedoak.ca), a thriving organic vegetable and cut flower farm in North Augusta, Ontario that feeds families from Kingston to Ottawa. On top of their on-farm work, Nikki and Stuart have ascended themselves as spokespeople and advocates for a sustainable and climate-friendly food system, associating themselves with organizations like the National Farmers Union and the Canadian Organic Growers. Stuart's attendance at COP 26 sparked our curiosity. He graciously met with us before, during and after the conference to discuss: Why, as a young farmer, attending this conference was important His hopes for the potential positive impacts COP 26 could have, and the ultimate outcome of the conference How they balance their advocacy work with their farm work Stuart's main takeaway from the experience, and how it fuels them to keep going as young farmers, despite the challenges and unpredictability of the profession
