In 2019, the anti-extradition movement broke out in Hong Kong, with one million and two million people taking to the streets. At first, Liu Guangcheng followed the participants in the street parade. After a frontline first responder was shot through the right eye by Hong Kong police, the paintbrush in his hand became the starting point of resistance. Sometimes when he is not on the streets, he works hard at his desk and his images are spread internationally through the Internet. For him, this is not only an artist’s mission, but also a citizen’s responsibility. He knows very well that if some things are lost, they will never come back. In May 2020, the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law was passed, and one country, two systems existed in name only. At a seemingly desperate moment, Hong Kong people did not back down. On the day of June 4th, tens of thousands of people poured into Victoria Park holding candles. What are Hong Kong people afraid of? What are they looking forward to? Why are they so brave? Liu Guangcheng sketched the times with his brush and recorded this important page of Hong Kong history.
