Rolf the Ranger is a shy nine-year-old giant whose life is complicated by a talking squirrel, Rat-A-Task, who urges him to set out on a mysterious journey, by Egil the poet who carves stories into trees in the woods, and by a band of Viking warriors who want to restore the old ways as the new religion of Christianity threatens to take over the land.
