In the years following the death of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and Octavian, Caesar's heir, jointly rule the Roman Empire. But it is a troubled arrangement and, in time, Antony seeks the support of Cleopatra, the wealthy queen of Egypt. At the same time Cleopatra is anxious for Caesarion, her son by Julius Caesar, to become the new ruler of the Empire.
