The unit is an exploration of the settlements established in Ontario by those African-Americans who chose to escape a life of enslavement in the United States. Students will be provided with some background information on slavery and the Underground Railroad, but the focus of the unit will be on the development, successes, and challenges faced by early African-American settlers in their efforts to establish communities in Ontario. African-American settlers will be looked at as pioneers, who played an often-overlooked role, not only in the development of Ontario, but also in the development of Canada. Students will be provided with opportunities to make connections and contrasts between their own everyday lives and the lives of the early settlers. .
